ENVIRONMENT CADETS PROGRAMME

Environment cadets programme is designed for the youth from ethnic mixed communities living in Uva province. The youth is mobilised as environment cadets and work together actively on issues related to environment and biodiversity conservation. The network build within these activities will function as an active advocacy group on peace and environment matters. This results a development and strengthen the understanding among different communities with the ultimate aim of peace promotion.

This programme will play a greater role in the national ODW programme. It will initially be implemented in Uva province in identified environment sensitive areas and 5000 environment cadets will be trained in a time period of 5 years. In 2004, 1000 cadets will be mobilised and 10 environment sensitive areas will be taken for the programme.

Project aims to conserve 50 water catchment areas developing them to its original conditions of bio-diversity.

  How it Operates...

Once the area is selected all the schools around that area will be contacted and collaborative relationship established. Awareness creation and education activities will be carried out in the schools as well as outside. Once the children are convinced about the environment and conservation of bio- diversity, they will be organized in to environment cadet groups. The groups will be in charge of one area where the activities will be started through the project.

The environmental cadets will identify the areas that they take up for conservation and protection. The cadets will carry out a scientific survey/study in the area and map the area in detailed form.

Based on the information collected, the cadet groups will develop a multi year plan to develop the area selected. This might a variety of conservation oriented activities. It also will include awareness creation among the community members.

The cadets will share the experiences among other youth clubs, and will start networking on a continuous activities basis.

Active environment cadets will work as a pressure group in the Project Cooperation Committee in order to air youth views into the programme.

It is expected to get the involvement of 7875 youth involved in these environment activities by 2011.
