  The Organization

Future in Our Hands (FIOH) is a non-governmental organization operating in Uva Province Sri Lanka. FIOH works with approximately 5000 families representing all ethnic groups. It is a member of a number of national and international networks relating to development issues.

  History
FIOH was formed in 1985 as an organisation for village development and was legally registered under the Social service Organisations Act in 1989. The root of the organization was from a popular movement based on the book written by Erik Dammann and the organization, the Future in Our Hands of Norway. FIOH Sri Lanka started on experimental basis of ways and means of empowering the poor, in identifying the strengths they possess and to use these strengths for their own benefit in an organised manner.

  Goal
The Goal of the FIOH, as an organization is to facilitate the rural poor in the identified area to reach and sustain a higher standard of life.

  Methodology
The organisational strategy is to facilitate participatory development process among the rural poor, so that they are able to reach their own objectives. In practice FIOH has continuous interaction with the beneficiaries, using trained facilitators.
Main programmes implemented by FIOH are savings and micro credit mobilization, promotion of ethnic harmony, organic farming training and promotion, entrepreneurship and technical training for youth and organising children’s clubs aimed at environment protection. FIOH works with all ethnic groups. About 1/3 of the target families of FIOH are Tamils in the plantation sector.

  Administrative capacity
A governing body is a board of directors consisting of 17 members. The staff includes the Field Coordinator, the Programme Officer, 7 Assistant Coordinators, 35 field officers and 4 Administrative staff. FIOH has 12 Tamil-speaking staff. The main office is situated in Badulla town and there are 5 field offices in the working areas.
The staffs have been trained in mobilisation techniques, participatory planning, Participatory monitoring and evaluation, organic farming, training skills, business promotion techniques, and on issues related to gender and ethnic harmony. The President is an international level consultant on participatory methodologies, strategic planning and other planning techniques.
Peace and reconciliation has been an integral part of FIOH own programme. Over the last 6 years FIOH actively works to build ethnic harmony locally. It is an active member in a large number of networks involved in policy lobbying and advocacy; one of the main focus areas is peace building.
