|
|
| |
Women's
Development Centre (WDC) is a non-government organization active
in promoting women’s improved conditions and positions
in the society. This is a national organization. |
|
| |
|
|
| |
History |
|
| |
The
Women’s Development Centre (WDC) became a registered organization
in 1986, following approximately ten years work with women in
a more voluntary, ad hoc manner. Since its inception the programs
and priorities of WDC have taken direction from the ever-changing
social-political and economic context of Sri Lanka and its consequent
impact on women. |
|
| |
|
|
| |
The
major activity of WDC is facilitating the social, political
and economic empowerment of women. Additionally, through awareness
raising and capacity building programmes WDC seeks to promote
ethnic harmony, socio-economic development and enhance the participation
of women at the local, district, and national levels, with the
view to achieving a peaceful society for all Sri Lankan citizens.
Integral to these goals is WDC’s ongoing commitment to
intervening in issues involving violence perpetrated against
women and children in Sri Lanka. |
|
| |
|
|
| |
WDC
has consistently and actively responded to the needs and issues
of communities in conflict areas. The National Advocacy Network
Program is one such response and currently works in five Districts
of Sri Lanka. Currently the NNP comprises five ‘Fora’
or ‘District’ networks; Hill Country Forum (HCWF),
Batticoloa Women’s Development Forum (WDF), Rajarata Women’s
Forum(RWF), Akkaraipattu Women’s Forum (AWF), and Hanguranketha
Women’s Forum (HWF). It is through the ongoing involvement
of WDC in various regions of the country that the National Advocacy
Network Program, community health programs, school programs,
community education, ‘rights based education and residential
shelter from physical and sexual violence programs have contributed
to the strengthening of WDC’s work and it’s recognition
in the various communities. |
