 Networking Youth

As the ODW program is scattered in different districts of Sri Lanka, networking youth at the program level is one of the strategies of ODW program. This was attempted  since beginning in year 2004, with the aim of sharing experiences and incorporating  their ideas into the program in order to make the ODW programs a more realistic youth program. But the level of active functioning of network  varied in each year due to then prevailing security situation.

One of the partner. FIOH rapidly implemented the networking strategy as a part of their project strategy, and developed a youth network among different ethnic groups and geographical divisions such district and provincial levels. Other  ODW partners applied FIOH youth networking strategies as a model during the past years. At the mean time WDC, NERTRA and KV has mobilized youth clubs at various levels, and tried to level up and linked with the FIOH youth network.

PSO  facilitated  to link the different youth networks and clubs functioning at project level and made it a programme level function. Training on  planning was done and planning  workshops  organized, and  facilities were provide to carry out the planned activities at the network level. As a result exchange visits to other partners’ projects and  meetings were conducted. Programme level camps were planned by youth themselves but could not be implemented  due to the high security restrictions during the year 2007, 2008 and 2009. Only FIOH could continue the network activities without any major problem.

In the year 2009, net work members revised network strategy due to the barriers and difficulties of  travel from place to another. So they developed an alternative plan which did not need much travel.  Youth network meetings are coupled up with every PCC meeting, Net work magazine published and the responsibilities shared among the network members, exchanges occurs where ever possible to do so. The  security situation is eased now and free movement for the youth is possible  in the year 2010.  So the youth network is utilizing this opportunities to the maximum in order to implement different types of activities whatever they can do. Exchange visits are conducted and a youth camp was  organized in Trincomalee.

YOUTH CAMP “MINDS TOGETHER” – PART III

Youth camp at the inter-project is one of the innovative and important event aimed at promoting understanding and ethnic harmony among the youths of all three communities. The youth camp provides the space for interaction  among youths of different ethnic groups. The ultimate aim is to build trust and understanding among them in order to contribute to lasting peace in the country.

The first and second youths camps  were facilitated and conducted by FIOH, one of the ODW partner in Badulla. This year (2010) the task of organizing and conducting the above event in Trincomalee district, has been encrusted to Kinniya Vision

Purpose of the youth camp: Providing space and opportunities for youths from the various youth networks to come to gather and take part in organizing and engaging in various activities, cultural, sports and exhibition etc, to interact and sharing experiences and learn from each other  to promote understanding and ethnic harmony among the youths. The security situation all over the island including Trincomalee is very positive when compared to the previous years. Therefore full participation was  observed in  the event.  Approximately 30 participants from each organization participated. This youth event was a continuation of the event organized earlier by the FIOH. Altogether more than 300 participants take part in this event. Different event such as dances, songs, sports events, art competition, exchange visits  provided much more enthusiasm among the youths who participated.
